How to exfoliate your skin to have a silky and smooth skin.
First we will tell you about the benefits of exfoliation:
How To Exfoliate Your Skin
(i) Exfoliation removes the top layer of dead epidermis cells to reveal the fresher, younger skin underneath.
(ii) Moreover removing dead skin cells also will tone your skin, get rid of pore-clogging dirt and oil and contribute in preventing acne.
(iii) As your dead skin cells are removed, this will help the moisturizers and serums to penetrate your skin better and also in foundation to glide smoothly over your face skin instead of sitting on scaly skin.
Some women exfoliate their faces only and forego other parts of their body. If you want to wear bikini or just adore to make your skin look radiant and less wrinkled, you should exfoliate your skin regularly all over.
We recommend that you also consider exfoliating before you apply tanning products or when you want to rejuvenate your winter-weary skin.
How Often to Exfoliate: For most women, exfoliating once or twice a week is enough to get smooth and silky skin. However, Oily skin needs to be exfoliated more often as compared to a dry skin. During warm weather also as you sweat more and your skin produce more oil which can lead to accumulation of dead cells, so you need to exfoliate often.
Advice: However, if after exfoliation your skin becomes extremely dry or gets irritated, you should scrub not so hard. Also cut down on how often you exfoliate and check whether you are allergic to any product.
Types of Exfoliants: Normal Cleansers and soaps help only in removing oil and dirt from the skin. They do not remove all of the dead skin cells. So we suggest that you use proper exfoliants for exfoliating your skin.
There are mainly two types of exfoliants:
(i) Physical scrubs, for instance sugar, salt or oatmeal, etc.
(ii) Chemical scrubs, for instance alpha-hydroxy acids and salicylic acid.
Exfoliating Soaps, Cleansers and Body Washes: We recommend for exfoliating purposes, you use those soaps or cleansers that are made especially for exfoliation.
They help in both cleansing your skin as well as for getting rid of dead skin cells. These grainy types of cleansers or soaps are made with natural ingredients, for instance sugar, sea salt, oatmeal or finely ground almonds or seeds.
These natural ingredients and synthetic exfoliating beads (many body washes and facial cleansers are made with synthetic exfoliating beads) work as physical exfoliants to remove dead cells from your skin surface.
We suggest that you use less often the exfoliants containing chemicals, such as alpha-hydroxy acids or salicylic acid. No doubt they are very effective, but they can cause dryness and irritation of the skin also.
Exfoliating Tools: Items you need to exfoliate are:
(i) Exfoliating Cleanser.
(ii) Exfoliating Gloves or Loofah body brush
(iii) Pumic Stone.
(iv) Body Lotion.
How To Exfoliate your Skin:
Following are the basic steps in exfoliating your skin;
Step 1: Before you get into shower, brush your dry skin to remove your loose dead skin cells. You can use any one of loofah, body brush or exfoliating gloves. Start from soles of your feet and work upwards your body.
Step 2: Get into bath or shower, as the case may be.
Step 3: Rub a pumic stone onto your feet to remove calluses and smoothen rough skin. In case your feet are exceedingly rough, soak them in a basin of warm water mixed with half a cup of milk for fifteen minutes before you step into shower.
Step 4: Apply exfoliating cleanser to your loofah or exfoliating brush or gloves. Scrub your body with any of these in circular motions. Start from the bottoms of your feet, working upwards your body. Take care to scrub not hard on the sensitive parts of your skin.
Step 5: For exfoliating your back, use a brush with long hand.
Step 6: For your face, use exfoliants made especially for faces as they are soft and will work gentler on your face.
Step 7: Exfoliate your hands as well. People will love to look at your soft and smooth hands.
Step 8: Do not forget your lips. Slather your lips with petroleum jelly. Massage your lips in a circular motion with a tooth brush. Wipe your lips off the excess petroleum jelly.
Step 9: When you are done with scrubbing, rinse your body thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Step 10: Step out of your bath or shower. Pat dry your skin and apply a moisturizing body lotion all over your body while it is still slightly damp.
Some Skin Exfoliation Tips:
(i) Use Loofahs only on your body. They are harsh for your face.
(ii) Do not exfoliate a sunburnt skin or a skin area having cuts or bruises.
(iii) Go for exfoliant cleansers that contain natural ingredients, such as sugar, sea salt, ground almonds, walnuts, seeds or other grainy ingredients.
(iv) Use a washcloth for mild exfoliation.
(v) Natural Beauty Tips to make your own exfoliant cleanser at home:
(a) Mix sea salt, olive oil and lemon juice,
(b) Mix Ground almonds and powdered milk.
(b) Mix Ground almonds and powdered milk.
(vi) A better choice is to use an exfoliant that you can apply with your fingers / hands. It will give you more control about how hard you scrub and where you apply it.
